Historical Ohio Valley
North of the historical ranching community of Gunnison, Colorado lays one of the most beautiful, unspoiled, pristine valleys in the state. Ranches dot the landscape, and cattle, deer and elk graze on the hillsides. Ohio Creek meanders its way through lush meadows and ranchers still move their herds the way they did 100 years ago. It was to this green valley that Jacob “Jake” Hinkle brought his family in 1885. He purchased land near the juncture of Mill and Ohio Creeks, built a cabin, barns and outbuildings, which became known as “Hinkle’s Spur”, and commenced his ranching operation.

A narrow gauge train, the Denver & Rio Grande, ran through the property, dropped off cars at the “spur,” to be loaded with cattle, hay, coal and lumber, then proceeded on to the mining town of Baldwin. Hinkle’s ranch produced some of the best hay in the state; some of the best fishing (still does) and life was good. Just around the bend was the tiny settlement of Minaret where John Tripp owned a saloon and supplied lumber mill and mine workers with refreshments aplenty. “Jake” passed on in 1898 and the ranch changed hands for over 100 years. In 1956 Hollywood movie director John Ford brought a cast and crew to Hinkle’s Spur and filmed winter snow scenes for the classic western movie “The Searchers,” starring John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter and Natalie Wood. In 1964 he returned again for “Cheyenne Autumn,” starring Richard Widmark. Since that time, actor Jack Elam has included the historical landmark in a western movies documentary. In 1999 Jake and Wendy Jacobs purchased the ranch with a vision to restore the place to its original integrity. The roof on the cabin had all but fallen in, but the outer logs were sound. Through a two year process the couple and their carpenters worked to rebuild everything. Today Hinkle’s Spur stands as a tribute to what can be done to preserve history with care, hard work and dedication. The old railroad grade is still there and the last remaining stockyards along the route remain intact on the ranch.
Yes, nine miles up county road 730 is a little piece of “Heaven.”
